DETROIT – The full-size pickup truck segment is always a knife fight, with the Detroit 3 continually jousting for customers, bragging rights and profits. Ford, the leader by sales volume, is fortifying the 2027 F-150 to head off redesigned and updated products from its rivals with significant upgrades. There’s a more powerful standard V6 under the hood, additional V8 availability, new hands-free towing technology, snazzier wheels and grilles and a new Carhartt edition.

Key Takeaways

  • Engine lineup adjusted with a new 3.0-liter turbo V6 base engine, wider V8 availability
  • Mild exterior updates to some trims and a new Carhartt Edition added
  • Ford BlueCruise hands-free semi-automated driving technology now available when towing

The current-generation F-150 launched for the 2021 model year, and Ford has continually upgraded it since with new trims, more tech and powertrain updates. Those updates have been good enough to help it wrest the number 1 ranking on our full-size pickups list from Ram and nab our 2026 Best Full-Size Pickup Truck for the Money Award earlier this year.

But time waits for no truck, and these latest enhancements come after General Motors unveiled the 2027 GMC Sierra and the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado this summer, and Ram has made inroads with customers with the highly publicized return of its Hemi V8 engine. In a bid to remain on top, Ford’s F-150 updates focused on the chores its trucks are most commonly used for. The F-Series (including Super Duty models) has been the top-selling vehicle in the United States for 49 years.

“We’re in a competitive marketing place, and it’s what our customers want,” said Todd Eckert, senior director, Ford Blue Truck consumer marketing.

U.S. News got an early look at the 2027 F-150 ahead of its launch in early 2027. It’ll be some months before it hits dealers, but the order banks will open on Sept. 15.

The 2027 Ford F-150 King Ranch gets a new face and new tech features, but for many buyers, the big news is that the V8 is back on the menu.

2027 Ford F-150: What’s Under the Hood

Ford has shaken up the F-150’s engine lineup for 2027, making the twin-turbo 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 the truck’s standard powerplant, replacing the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 on which it is heavily based. Power remains the same: 325 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque, but Ford says it provides more torque during daily driving situations and reaches peak pulling power at lower rpm. The well-received engine has also been used in the Ford Explorer ST and Lincoln Aviator.

The 3.0-liter EcoBoost will be better for towing, merging onto highways and provides quicker acceleration from a standstill, said F-150 Chief Program Engineer Kelly Kohlstrand.

With Ram bringing back the Hemi V8 and GM adding two new V8 engines to its truck lineup, Ford is responding by making the 5.0-liter V8 available on the King Ranch and Platinum trims for the first time since 2023. The V8 is now available on all F-150s.

The "strength and durability of that engine” appeals to a part of the F150’s customer base, Eckert said.

Ford will continue to offer the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, 3.5-liter EcoBoost hybrid V6 and 5.2-liter supercharged V8 (Raptor-only) engines. All F-150 pickups get 10-speed automatic transmissions.

2027 Ford F-150 King Ranch Towing With BlueCruise

Hands-free highway driving tech like BlueCruise is truly useful on long highway runs, and 2027 F-150s will add the ability to trailer with it turned on.

Towing, Now with BlueCruise

Ford is adding a towing element to its BlueCruise driver assist feature, noting more than 75% of F-150 customers tow things with their trucks. Ford upgraded BlueCruise to adjust and counter aerodynamic forces, like when passing a semi, and says the towing feature will deactivate when driving through construction zones.

Additionally, drivers need to fill out a profile in their F-150 with hitch and trailer information so the BlueCruise system can determine if the towing feature can be safely used, and it won’t activate if the trailer is too heavy. All 2027 F-150s equipped with BlueCruise will have access to the towing feature.

“We’re looking for technologies that are purposeful,” Eckert said.

2027 Ford F-150 Lariat

Greg Migliore for U.S. News & World Report

Most 2027 F-150 trims get modest visual updates, including the addition of a lot more chrome on the mid-range Lariat.

Style Updates: Wheels and Grilles

While the F-150’s basic sheetmetal carries over – the 2027 models look mostly the same as before – Ford tweaked the grilles on the XLT, Lariat and King Ranch models. The XLT gets wider bars, Lariat gets chrome trim and the King Ranch goes from a three- to two-bar appearance. The wheel designs are slightly modified, as well.

2027 F-150 Carhartt Edition

A spiritual successor to Ford’s Eddie Bauer models that ran from the 1980s until 2010, Ford has increased its partnership with Detroit-based workwear company Carhartt, adding a special model as part of the 2027 updates.

The new F-150 Carhartt's exterior upgrades are subtle, with special badging, wheels, side steps and graphics, but the interior upgrades are substantial.

The F-150 Carhartt gets 20-inch wheels, Carhartt badging inside and out and borrows headlights from the Lobo model and the hood from the off-road-oriented Tremor. Inside, the colors and materials evoke Carhartt’s rugged ethos. There’s triple stitching and two-tone graphics, plus Carhartt logos on the headrests and seat pockets. “Every detail is purposeful,” said Bhavna Mistry, color and materials design specialist.

The Carhartt package costs $4,195. Earlier this year, Ford revealed a Carhartt package for the F-Series Super Duty and showed a similar, if slightly more high-end Bronco Filson edition.

Inside the F-150 Carhartt there are hard-wearing but luxurious-looking fabrics and specially embroidered headrests.

More Affordable Off-Roading

In a move to make some of its off-road models more accessible, Ford is offering models with less content but the same capability at a lower price. The entry-level Tremor equipment group deletes heated front seats, uses a six-speaker sound system instead of eight speakers, manual air conditioning and fixed rear glass instead of a sliding panel.

The entry-level Raptor package similarly nixes some comfort while retaining the Raptor’s performance. The new Raptor version drops the head-up display, fog lamps (kind of a cool look with the empty fascia slots), mobile office package and jettisons the 14-speaker audio system for a more humble eight-speaker setup.

“We know from customers that one of the fastest growing reasons to buy a truck is to go off-road,” said John Walawender, F-150 consumer brand manager.

The Carhartt edition gets new fabrics and interior trim, but changes to the 2027 F-150's dashboard and basic tech offerings are relatively minor.

2027 Ford F-150: When and How Much?

The 2027 Ford F-150 can be ordered starting Sept. 15 and will begin arriving at dealerships in early 2027, Ford said. The F-150 is assembled in Dearborn, Mich., and Kansas City, Mo., though production is dependent on Aluminum factories in other locales. That impacted production this year and indirectly led to the demise of the F-150 Lightning.

Ford released some pricing details for the 2027 models. The entry-level XL starts at $40,585, including hefty $2,795 destination charges. The F-150 Carhartt is based on the XLT SuperCrew and starts at $65,455. The entry-level Tremor starts at $62,400 and the base Raptor starts at $77,800. These trims, without some content reserved for the higher packages, represent savings of about $5,300 and $4,000, respectively, over the 2026 models.
